Hanne Merete Knutsen
Performing Artist / Choreographer / Dance Artist / Mask Performer
I am Hanne Merete Knutsen, a performing artist with over three decades of experience in dance, Choreography and visual theatre. Since 1990, I have been exploring creative expressions that range from contemporary dance to flamenco, often in interplay with text, film, puppets and masks.
My artistic journey has been deeply inspired by Stein Mehren´s poetry, which has been an important source of inspiration for several of my performances, including "Hotel Memory" (2000), "Night Machine" (2004), "The Reception" (2007) and "By the Mirror" (2011). In the first to installation performances, Mehren contributed creative input, enriching the process.
Along with Øystein Sørensen (Solon), I have also created the work "Cohen & Flamenco" with combines the music of Leonard Cohen with fusion flamenco dance. This project was a deep dive in to Cohen´s art and his inspiration from the flamenco poset Federico Garcia Lorca. Previously, I have worked with Lorca´s texts in London with the Spanish theatre group Teatro Lomvris in 1998.
Over the past ten years, I have collaborated with actors to integrate text, film and puppet theatre in to my works, The outcome has been performances like "The District Dancer" (2017), "Should I Shouldn't I ...!" (2020), "Skirt" (2021) and "Read The Room" (2022)-each with its unique story.
Earlier in 2024, I participated in further education at Flöz Internationale Theatre Company in Berlin, where I worked on the relationship between the mask, the body and the character development. Based on this, I developed the preliminary project/performance "Jolene", which was presented on April 28, 2024 at Moss Cultural house. This is a performance I am Currently working on and plan to stage in fall og 2026.
